Austin Latinx Chicanx Behavioral Health Network
The Austin Latinx Chicanx Behavioral Health Network (LCBHN) was launched in September 2019 to provide a space for Latinx/Chicanx persons interested in the design, delivery, and cultural appropriateness of behavioral health policies, programs, services and supports for LatinX/ChicanX persons living with or impacted by mental health, substance use, and/or developmental disabilities.
Network members include behavioral health professionals; university/college students; consumers; youth and their families; faith-based leaders; community leaders and community members; and anyone interested in LatinX/ChicanX issues.
The network meets monthly to provide announcements and resources, discuss best and innovative practices, facilitate conversation in relevant topics by subject matter experts, coordinate and align available assets, and identify gaps and proposed solutions. The group also promotes networking opportunities to sustain ongoing collaboration, professional development, and support.
The focus on the LatinX/ChicanX population has the potential to improve the knowledge, skills, and abilities of health care providers and stakeholders in the design, delivery, and cultural appropriateness of behavioral health services and influence the conversation away from individual mental illness towards a population health approach and systems-level change. In addition, this network focused on LatinX/ChicanX can potentially serve as a model for other communities to replicate.

Volunteering and Advocacy
The Hogg Foundation believes that people with lived experience of mental health conditions can reshape the mental health system in Texas through volunteerism and advocacy. Consumer-Operated Service Providers (COSPs) like the Austin Area Mental Health Consumers (AAMHC), the Self-Help and Advocacy Center (SHAC) and Austin Clubhouse are independent organizations run by and for individuals in recovery, and are another possibility for Latinx/Chicanx who are interested in joining their own recovery stories with a larger community service mission. We also recommend checking out volunteer opportunities with other mental health related organizations, such as Via Hope, NAMI Austin, Austin State Hospital, Depression and Bipolar Alliance, and Integral Care.
