Recovery-Focused Treatment and Support
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), recovery is a process of service delivery that promotes change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their potential.[i] The foundation strongly endorses the person-centered recovery model of treatment and support. Recovery-oriented and person-centered care adapts the medical treatment model to infuse a philosophy of care that makes individuals responsible for their own recovery with the needed support of professionals, family and friends. The impact of behavioral health services should be measured by how well individuals can manage their condition and not simply by counting the number of treatments received or the reduction in hospitalization.
Recommendations:
- As the state considers restructuring the health and human services systems, recovery should be the desired outcome for individuals with mental health conditions across agencies or divisions. Treatment and services should be based on a recovery model of care.
- Recovery focused outcome metrics should be included in quality measurements and accountability across agencies or divisions.
