Here’s a snapshot of the presentations made, events hosted, and honors received by the talented and dedicated staff of the Hogg Foundation during the month of May 2026.
Jason Castillo, policy program specialist, participated in the Texas Health and Human Services’ (HHSC) Behavioral Health Policy Roundtable. The roundtable’s work will help inform HHSC’s upcoming Statewide Behavioral Health Strategic Plan.
Jason also represented the foundation at the Texas Judicial Commission on Mental Health’s (JCMH) Collaborative Council meeting. The Collaborative Council advises on the projects and strategies undertaken by JCMH to engage and empower court systems through collaboration, education, and leadership, in order to improve the lives of individuals with mental health needs, substance use disorders, or intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Jason and Maddie Garza, policy fellow, visited San Antonio and Uvalde to learn about innovative practices and challenges faced by local mental health practitioners. This visit was conducted through the Hogg Policy Academy, which provides professional development and an enriching network to Hogg Policy Fellows in the areas of mental health policy and advocacy.
Kelley Glover, PhD, postdoctoral research fellow, led a workshop for military and veteran spouses using musical storytelling to tell their life journeys. As a part of their storytelling, participants learned how to use music as a “toy of somatic awareness” to describe their emotions and where those emotions lived in their bodies
Kelley also led a somatic drumming circle event for the Hays County Behavioral Health Department, a recent recipient of a Special Opportunity Funds Allocation from the Hogg Foundation.
Dr. Octavio N. Martinez, Jr., executive director, attended the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s workshop, Mental Health After Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): From Evidence to Integrated Care. This national convening brought together leaders, researchers, clinicians, advocates, and policymakers to examine the relationship between TBI and mental health outcomes and focus on advancing TBI prevention, care, recovery, and research.
Elizabeth Stauber, archivist and records manager, facilitated the fourth virtual meeting in the Dialogues on Mental Health Records presentation series, Collaborating to Preserve and Share Institutional Records in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. The series has highlighted projects on state policy, community collaboratives and archives, state hospital museums, and other preservation efforts happening around the country.
