Here’s a snapshot of the presentations made, events hosted, and honors received by the talented and dedicated staff of the Hogg Foundation during the month of August 2026.
In his capacity as an adjunct assistant professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, Jason Castillo, policy program specialist, began teaching a graduate level course, Dynamics of Organizations and Communities.
Vicky Coffee, director of foundation initiatives, long standing member of the NAMI FaithNet Advisory Group, attended the Pathways to Hope mental health conference. Exploring the intersection of faith, community, and civic engagement, the conference brought together mental health professionals, social workers, educators, members of the judicial system, law enforcement, faith leaders, caregivers, and individuals with lived experience to strengthen and improve the mental health care system.
Maddie Garza, program associate, and Jason Castillo, policy specialist, participated in the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation Funding Forum, where Maddie gave a presentation exploring how lived experience and personal storytelling can be a powerful tool for advocacy, community engagement, and systems change. She provided guidance on crafting compelling narratives that elevate lived experiences and help decision makers better understand community needs. Maddie also participated in the “Conversation with Funders” panel to speak on the foundation’s funding priorities and provide helpful information about how to make a proposal more competitive.
In her capacity as an adjunct assistant professor at the UT School of Social Work, Maddie began teaching an undergraduate level course, Social Work Practice in Organizations and Communities.
Rick Ybarra, senior program officer, was invited to serve as a subject matter expert on a plenary panel, Philanthropy as Sustainability, for a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) annual grantee meeting. The presentation offered grantees an opportunity to learn more about philanthropy as a source of funding and ways to engage with local, regional, and state philanthropic organizations
