The Hogg Foundation is seeking talented young creators, ages 16 to 24, for its New Voices Showcase. We are looking for short videos that answer the question, “How would the world be different if it cared about your mental health?” Video creators can use storytelling, humor, advice, or any of the above in creating an entry for our mental health video contest for youth. Submissions must be no longer than five minutes in length. Videos can depict situations that are real or fictionalized. Our goal is to give opportunities to talented young people who care about mental health. Videos created in the style of popular platforms like Tik-Tok are acceptable.

As an incentive, we are offering cash awards for the most meaningful submissions. Videos are reviewed by Hogg Foundation staff. They are rated according to quality, originality, and relevance to our mission of supporting mental health for all Texans.

Members of historically excluded groups are encouraged to submit. This includes race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, gender, religion, or economic standing. Aspiring filmmakers are also encouraged to submit.

The cash awards are as follows:

  • First prize: $500
  • Second prize: $250
  • Third prize: $100

Every video creator who sends a submission is added to the foundation’s new Contributors Circle. This can lead to future paid freelance opportunities. Also, all accepted entries (not just the award-winning ones), will be published on the Hogg Foundation website. Video creators keep the rights to their work while allowing the Hogg Foundation to use their work in its communications. Video makers receive credit for any materials we use or share.

Questions and Answers

What is Fluxx?

Fluxx is the foundation’s online grants management system where applicants must submit materials. Applicants must first register in Fluxx to apply for this opportunity. The foundation can only accept entries completed and submitted via the Fluxx portal.

What are you looking for?

We are looking for short videos that answer the question, “How would the world be different if it cared about your mental health?” Our goal is to give opportunities to talented young people who care about mental health. Videos created in the style of popular platforms like Tik-Tok are acceptable.

Video submissions can be any length as long as they are no longer than five minutes. Decisions on style and tone are left up to you. Videos can depict situations that are real or fictionalized. In deciding on the cash awards, we give preference to videos that speak to any of the following:

  • The lived experience of having a mental health condition.
  • What you have learned about resilience and recovery during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • What you have learned about equity, justice, or rights that is relevant to others during this challenging time in history.
  • Living in Texas and why your experience is particularly relevant to Texans.

The more that your submission addresses the above concerns (along with being well made), the more likely it will be considered for one of the few cash awards.

We will accept video submissions in the following file formats: MP4 and MOV. Videos sent in any other format will not be accepted.

I would like to know more about the cash awards.

To encourage high quality submissions for our mental health video contest for youth, the foundation is offering a limited number of cash awards for the best writing. There will be one first prize of $500, at least one second prize of $250, and at least one third prize of $100. Depending on the number of quality submissions, there may be additional second and third prizes.

Please explain the emphasis on “historically excluded communities.” What does that mean?

We recognize that mental health affects everyone. But we also recognize that racism, homophobia, sexism, and other forms of discrimination harm people’s ability to be mentally well. In crafting your video, you should feel free to draw from any part of your background or identity that you feel is relevant to your mental health.

Who will be seeing my video?

All videos are viewed by foundation staff. We rate them according to quality, originality, and relevance to our mission of transforming mental health for all Texans. Winning entries will be shared publicly.

How do I send my video?

On the Fluxx application screen you will see a section called “Required Application Documents.” There you will see an “Upload here” link that takes you to a special section of our website where you can upload your video file. Please submit your video in either MP4 or MOV format.

Could this lead to future paid opportunities?

Yes! Every video creator who sends a submission is added to the foundation’s new Contributors Circle. This can lead to future paid freelance opportunities.

What should I know about the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health?

The Hogg Foundation for Mental Health exists to improve the mental health of Texans. We do this by giving grants to help communities improve mental health and end conditions that harm mental health. For more information, visit the About Us page.

Is there going to be a teleconference where applicants can learn more about this opportunity?

There will be an optional Zoom conference on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., CT. To submit questions in advance, send your questions to hogg-grants@austin.utexas.edu by Monday, July 11, 5:00 p.m. CT.

To participate in the Zoom conference, you must register in advance. Register using this form by Thursday, July 7, 11:59 p.m. CT.

Is there a print-friendly version of the Call for Entries (CFE)?

Yes, Download a print-friendly version of the Call for Entries. The information in the print and web versions are identical.

Can you share some examples of how my video will be used?

We are dedicated to educating the public about mental health. By participating in the New Voices Showcase, you’re making an important contribution to that goal. We will feature your video on the Hogg Foundation website, our YouTube, and social media. Your video will also be shared in our Mental Health Headlines email (9000 subscribers, subscribe for free today), and on our podcast, Into the Fold.

Will you accept a video that’s already been published?

We are seeking original content. We will decline any submissions that have been published before. After your submission has been accepted by us, you’re free to seek to get it published elsewhere.

Is there anything you won’t accept?

Yes. The New Voices Showcase promotes free expression and honesty about mental health challenges. But we must balance that with the needs of the Hogg Foundation’s audience. Entries containing mature subject matter will not be disqualified, but they must be high on overall merit to be considered for the cash awards.

The foundation reserves the right to reject videos for the following reasons:

  • The video promotes ideas that are inconsistent with the Hogg Foundation’s mission and core values. This includes advocating for the exclusion or mistreatment of specific groups of people; advocating suicide or self-harm; or promoting violence.
  • The video is sent to us in an unreadable or unusable format.
  • The video promotes a product or service.
  • We learn that the video has been previously published or contains copyrighted material.

Once I’ve submitted my video to you, can I seek to get it published elsewhere?

Yes. The Hogg Foundation is not a commercial enterprise; thus, we won’t demand an exclusive right to your content. Once we accept your submission, you’re free to seek to get it published elsewhere. We do ask that you grant us an unlimited license to use, quote, excerpt, or reproduce your work in our communications.

I have previously received a grant from the Hogg Foundation. Am I eligible to apply for this opportunity?

Yes, you are still eligible to apply for this opportunity.

Can I submit more than once?

No, only one submission per video creator.

Can I submit using a pseudonym?

Yes. Pseudonyms are acceptable. Please be aware, however, that if you win one of the cash awards, we will need your true name to process payment.
