Robert Lee Sutherland Seminar XV
Integrated Health: Connecting Body and Mind
September 8 - 9, 2008 Austin, Texas
More than 400 stakeholders in health care gathered at the Hyatt Regency in Austin on Sept. 8 and 9 to discuss bringing to Texas an emerging national movement to improve people’s health by treating physical and behavioral illnesses together.
The Hogg Foundation for Mental Health sponsored the 15th Robert Lee Sutherland Seminar Integrated Health: Connecting Body and Mind to share the knowledge and experience of more than 50 national, state and local physical and behavioral health care experts, providers and consumers with experience in systematically coordinating physical and behavioral health care.
Research shows that physical and behavioral health are interconnected. When the body and mind are treated separately, people are less likely to achieve health – often at a significant cost to the individual, the health care system and larger community. A strong body of evidence demonstrates that integrating, or systematically coordinating, physical and behavioral health care to treat the whole person has important benefits, especially to consumers.
The conference convened stakeholders from across Texas to explore the substantial research and emerging practice that support this forward-thinking approach to improving physical and behavioral health.
