Bilingual Scholarships for Mental Health Workforce Diversity

Studies have shown that populations of color and people who speak a language other than English are under-represented in mental health professions in Texas and elsewhere in the United States. As a result, many people may not have access to mental health services that adequately meet their cultural and linguistic needs.

The Hogg Foundation introduced a groundbreaking bilingual scholarship program in 2008 to increase cultural and linguistic diversity in the Texas mental health workforce. The program also is helping to build diversity in higher education programs for mental health professions. The statewide program was the first of its kind in Texas, and possibly in the U.S. More than 100 scholarships have been awarded through the fall 2011 semester.

Scholarships are available at Texas graduate schools of social work that are accredited or pending accreditation by the national Council on Social Work Education. The scholarships pay full tuition and fees and may be available for spring, summer or fall semesters, depending on the individual school's academic program.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be accepted as a new student by a Texas graduate social work program that is accredited or in candidacy for accreditation by the national Council on Social Work Education.
  • Be fluent in English and a second language chosen by the school, typically Spanish.
  • Commit to working in Texas after graduation providing mental health services for a period equal to the timeframe of the scholarship.
  • Meet any additional selection criteria required by the program of their choice.

Application Process

  • Contact the graduate program of your choice for deadlines and forms. Each program has its own scholarship application schedule and review process, including assessing the linguistic fluency of applicants and selecting nominees.
  • Submit your scholarship application directly to the graduate program. The foundation does not accept applications directly from students.
  • Your school will select scholarship finalists and submit their application packets to the foundation for final approval.
  • You will be contacted by your school when the scholarship recipients have been selected.
