An Analysis of the Texas Mental Health Code

The 3rd edition of the Hogg Foundation’s popular publication An Analysis of the Texas Mental Health Code examines statutes related to the civil commitment process.

Since 1957, legal professionals navigating the intricacies of the civil commitment process in Texas have turned to a version of the publication for guidance and clarification.

Michael J. Churgin, Professor of Law at The University of Texas School of Law and an expert on mental health law in Texas, drafted this and earlier editions of the publication going back to 1987.

The 3rd edition is current through the 79th Legislative Session. It is available to view or download as a PDF file. Downloading the publication requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.

After the 80th Legislative Session ends in June 2007, the Foundation will issue a revised edition to incorporate changes stemming from the session. The revised edition will be available online and in hard copy. Following the 80th Legislature revision, the Hogg Foundation will produce An Analysis of the Texas Mental Health Code as an exclusively online resource.
